Welcome to Julie's Garden

Gardening is one of my favorite pastimes - six months out of the year, that is. Since I live in a fairly cold, northern climate (Spokane, Washington), I am learning to deal with our way-too-short season and actually get some results. This website is a chronicle of my efforts, which will hopefully help other gardeners in similar situations.

I am primarily interested in growing organic vegetables (and some fruit) to feed my two-person household during the 4-5 months the garden actually produces. If I ever get enough of a surplus, I would like to donate it to the food bank, but so far it hasn't happened yet. My growing area also includes a small herb garden with a fairly good selection of culinary herbs, most perennial.

By "organic", I mean not using chemicals, whether it be chemical fertilizer or pesticides or even enriched topsoil/potting soil. I use whatever seeds or plants I can get my hands on, and don't worry about if they're of organic origin. I am pretty much self-taught, through books and workshops, and use whatever techniques seem like they might work. My intent is to reduce the amount of chemicals entering the environment and my body.

Future Ideas

One of my ideas for the next house we happen to live in (some years from now) is to design and plant a Medieval or Renaissance herb/vegetable garden. I will add any tidbits of information about these topics, as I learn them.
